Duffy, 2008 debut album Rockferry entered the UK Album Chart at number 1…

Duffy is a Welsh singer-songwriter with a great voice. A must have album “Rockferry” to listen with your sweetie. The two best tracks are “Rockferry” track 1 and “Distant Dreamer” track 10.

I came across this artist while in London, and used the iPhone application “Shazam” to tag and download on iTunes. Yeh, Duffy is the hipster alternative to Amy Winehouse.

A British Columbia Road Trip

For those of you that feel like the urban lifestyle is getting to be a grind. Take a look at what you can do with friends or family and go on a road trip!

 

 

May 22nd (Vancouver to Osoyoos)

9:15am: Starting in Gastown, Vancouver BC, Canada we headed east(rolled onto Trans-Canada Highway 1) on thru to Yarrow (shooting range; as far as I had been out of Vancouver), then Chilliwack (lush greens, rolling plain), (Changes to #3 Route @ Hope (beautiful creek along highway, pine trees), then endless mountain passes and curves. Next town Princeton (went to city museum and walked around downtown), then on to Hedley (Gold chute on mountain; historical Gold Rush town and heritage site), next stop Keremeos (looks like desert surrounded by mountains: had to buy Evian water at corner store: More scrub and sagebrush; in deep dry valley… Also the first sign of wine orchards), then to

Osoyoos( it comes out of nowhere around a downward mountain pass. In a deep valley with a lake). We spent the nite at the Best Western. Later that nite I took the Kuwahara folding bike out and rode around the lake and to the local pub  Very hot and dry- got ‘mee-self’ a pint of the dark stuff, aka Guinness.  Spoke with locals and then quiet ride back to hotel later that nite. Along quiet empty street and the lakeside.

May 23 (Osoyoos to Vernon)

My birthday (Gemini). Woke up (to wake up call) and took route 97. Morning ride through Oliver (Wine capital of Canada, Orchards everywhere); Okanagen Falls(stopped at outdoor flea market, looked at all the swords). Hilly road.; Penticton (Stockwell Day. Conservative riding. Large billboard of him on the way in. ( Big and beautiful public beach) stopped and bought a “Venus Flytrap” plant. ; Summerland, Nice homes with view of lake and many cars on road. After Summerland plus construction and grid lock on highway next to lake. ; Peachland (Along Okanagen lake) stopped and dipped feet in cold very

water. Ate lunch at “The Blind Angler in Peachland” on the water. Delicious ceasar salad and Lobster and bacon wrap! Highly recommended by locals. ; onward to West Cologna. Busy strip mall city.at this point my step father mentions the word  “Generica” (generic + america) and “BITCH” (being in total charge). Very clever. Anyway on over bridge to Kelowna(aka “Generica”) very long drive to get through which we called “escape from Kelowna”
Kalamalka (greater Vernon;) to Vernon. Spent my birthday dinner at a Best Western eating rack of lamb and watching Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in pub.

May 24th: (Vernon to Kamloops)

Leave Vernon 8:45 am w/o breakfast. Highway 6 East through valleys and winding roads to Kamloops. Stopped for breakfast at lil road diner “Marias Eclectic Cafe” ( in Cherryville) and best bacon I have had, deer on the road, had to slow down Stopped at Lost Lake at the summit of Monahachee (outhouse withhole in ground), on and on winding roads, across a ferry 10 minutes to other side.( Lower Arrow Head Lake) Turquoise mountain lake!; Town of Burton (no cell phone service) Highlight: The stop at McDonald Creek Park West Kootany. Amazing and beautiful lake, warm water, nobody around. Blue lake surrounded by

mountains. (It’s 10 miles south of Naksup).  forward to another short ferry ride and then to town of Nakusp. Filled up with gas. Twisty windy road up to Revelstoke… Wrong way andasked for directions. I found the way but Step father didn’t agree and did a Uturn on the highway. Called me “Useless as a bull withtits.” Turns around finds the Revelstoke sign - And I was right all along !!! hahaha! Who useless now mate!

Anyway - made it to the Ferry at Grouse Bay. Waited 40 minutes for next one. Wrote my name in the rock. Went climbing on grey rocks. 30 minute ferry ride to continue on to Revelstoke in 30 miles . We reached ; Revelstoke city limits at 3:15 pm w blue skies. Ate at Dennys then (smoke break) left at 4:20 on TransCanada 1. Following old CPR route right beside highway.; Sicamous 5:10 pm ; scenic route to Salmon Arm; ; on to Kamloops. After dinner with the parents ate an Italian restaurant  I drove folding Kuwahara bike to closest Pub up the hill. Later that nite rode back to Comfort Inn buzzed and happy.

May 25th (Kamloops to Vancouver)

First light … My Step Father lost the car keys. Asked me if I had them???  Called BCAA and said I must gave them, cause we took my filding bike out of the trunk the nitebefore. I checked my room anyway.  He found them on the floor of their room 45 minutes later. Left Kamloops at 9:15 am. 15 minutes out, stopped at top and amazing valley view. Definately a highlight! Just got deserty. Dry mountains. ; South of Cache Creekthe trees are red on the mountain by the pine beatle. 1000’s of “Red” pine trees, dead among green ones into the horizon and rolling hills. Deep valleys and sharp drop beside road, and NO barrier- Step father driving is making me very nervous!!! Thompson River below ; Town of Lytton, snow capped mountains in distance. On the slope of the Thompson River had lunch at Diner (1934) large Native Indian population. Stopped a viewpoint “Jackass Mountain”. Picture of Step Father and I on the summit. (they have this one)

I feel like we’re going to go flying off a cliff any moment with his retardo driving!!!. Anxiery and then drove by next… Boston Bar. Sorry its’ a dump. Nothing more to say. Houses vandalized and grafittied. Onward to town of Yalestopped for ice cream and nature call. No cell phone service. Arrived in Hope 2:10pm. 5 hours since Kamloops. The way from Langley to Vancouver took the longest, driving slowed down to a crawl. So slow and always in the far right lane! 4:05 and in Burnaby. Christ man step on the gas. If I say boo about it - just not worth the hassle.

DestinationVancouver 4:15pm Gastown. Home at long last. Never get in a car with them again for 7 hours a day! …yet somehow happy we spent time together. End. Finis.

The changing nature of Social Media - Forces of collaboration

Yeh, You all know the story - how to make money, money, and more money from traffic on social communities. All the corporate players competing for your eyeball, clicks, acquisition - and to brand the hell out of you. Whether on TV, paper ( good luck to that industry now…) and the Internet.

While running my online communities I’m approached by interested parties to monetize and other just wish to pick my brain about what works. The reality is something that they’re business model would never comprehend or allow to run its’ course.

When I worked at faceparty.com I was truly part of a new online community and I’ve brought that idea back to Vancouver, and to the professional direction of my life, and filtered into my online communities.

I have to say that in the 13 February 2009 issue of Campaign magazine, I was surprised to read and article about  “The Power Of the Swarm” by Chuck Brymer” from DDB. An excellent article that describes the changing nature of how advertisers spend online. Not just being concerned with the point of purchase, but the relationship of the community and your brand. And developing this for a mutual beneficial experience.

Do you have anyone in your organization that has more than a monetary interest in protecting your brand and engaging users? You should right now, An Online Community Manager, a new way of marketing.

Finally its’ very forward to see that an executive at the highest level of the Advertising Industry understands how this is changing. I can say that if there’s one person I would like to talk to in London it would be Chuck Brymer.

ASIDE: Really too bad when they approached me for a position the HR person so poorly represent them that I fled out of the building. Anyway great article and it can be found here;

Anyway it’s been over a month since the last post, cause a lot of things are going and changing. I’m back in Vancouver, Canada, and Gastown, seems like there’s even more junkies than when I left for the United Kingdom….

Anyway on to the PlayFair Online online community developments…

DOMAINS RENEWED FOR ANOTHER 2 YEARS:

All three domains have been renewed for another 2 years, representing a commitment to stay ahead of the curve wrt social niche communities. Onefaceone.com ; trailer park friends ( ode to Trailer Park Boys which was the best show ever on TV) ; and prettydirtyfriends.com will be around for good.

ALL SITES ARE BEING REDESIGNED:

After long consideration, the sites are being redesigned starting with the homepages on all three sites. I found a graphic designer here in Vancouver that understands the tone and feel of the sites. Much harder to explain through email to a contractor in India what needs to be done - I’ve tried that and it just is’nt as efficient. So I hit the jackpot with her.

SOME TECHNICAL TALK FOR PROJECT MANAGEMENT OF A REDESIGN:

….. And for you technical people a really interesting email from the programmer deciding what needs to be done to onefaceone.com….

“I’ve tested it on several resolutions and several different browser, and I coded it to conform to XHTML 1.0 Transitional standards. (To access that second link, enter the same username and password as above).

It will take some adjusting to go live with it, since the content right now is static (online users, user count, stuff like that) but overall, it’s finished.

I honestly think it took longer for me to splice it up to (valid) HTML than it probably took her to design it. The designing part of it is easy.

Let me know what you think is a fair price for coding it all from scratch (keep in mind, it’s a lot of work), and I also have some ideas I’ll eventually share with you that would likely generate more money, activity, etc.

But for the price thing, I mean for:
Creating the design from the image (which to me, is actually harder than coding a design from scratch).
Coding onefaceone from scratch
Integrating everything together
Optimizing all of it for performance
And there’s other stuff that I’m sure I’m forgetting. If I remember after I wake up, I’ll shoot you another email. Maybe you can think of the others.

Also, I know it all seems simple in theory - but I don’t want you to underestimate the work that’s going to be involved in re-coding it. Especially since I’m going to make every single page conform to XHTML 1.0 standards. And then possibly code a mobile version (but that’d probably be later on, I’m guessing).

I’m living in Vancouver again after working and living in London, UK for over a year, and I wanted to document the changes I’ve seen in my Neighborhood called “Gastown” .


Especially the Olympic Village being built now, pictures of the athletes and dorms being built very close to where I live on the water inlet.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Village is very close to GM Place home of the Vancouver Canucks, and our SkyTrain system rolling by in the air. (Very different than the Tube in London!) Right across from the inlet and accessible by a beautiful path along the water. Maximum 10 minute walk.
